About this book

The creator and his creation

Victor Frankenstein, an obsessive young scientist, discovers the secret of imparting life to inanimate matter — and creates a being whose existence will haunt him to the ends of the Earth.

“Beware; for I am fearless, and therefore powerful.”The creature · Frankenstein

Shelley’s narrators are articulate and introspective, so the English is formal and idea-rich rather than fast-paced — ideal for an advanced reader who wants to follow an argument, not just a plot.

For learners

Why this book is great for learning English

01

Ideas, clearly argued

The characters reflect and reason at length — excellent for following extended argument in English, the skill advanced exams reward most.

02

Formal, precise register

Early-19th-century narration is measured and exact, a strong model for academic and written English.

03

A story within a story

Nested narrators train you to track voice and perspective — a subtle but valuable reading skill.
